Afternoontea，thatmostquintessentialofEnglishcustomsis，perhapssurprisingly，arelativelynewtradition.WhilstthecustomofdrinkingteadatesbacktothethirdmillenniumBCinChinaandwaspopularisedinEnglandduringthe1660sbyKingCharlesII，itwasnotuntilthemid19thcenturythattheconceptof‘a(chǎn)fternoontea’firstappeared.

下午茶是英國傳統(tǒng)的精華所在，但它并沒有特別悠久的歷史。在中國，飲茶的歷史可以追溯到公元前3000年，而在英國，喝茶的風(fēng)俗直到17世紀(jì)60年代英王查爾斯二世時(shí)期才開始興盛起來。而下午茶的概念要到19世紀(jì)中葉才出現(xiàn)。

下午茶是由第七任貝德福公爵夫人安娜在1840年創(chuàng)造出來的。公爵夫人在下午四點(diǎn)鐘左右常常會(huì)感到饑餓，而根據(jù)當(dāng)時(shí)的風(fēng)尚，晚餐要在八點(diǎn)鐘才會(huì)開始，于是午餐和晚餐中間就有很長(zhǎng)的一段時(shí)間。公爵夫人就命人把茶，黃油面包和蛋糕在下午晚些時(shí)候送到她的房間里去吃。這以后就成了她的習(xí)慣了，而且她開始邀請(qǐng)好友一起來飲茶吃點(diǎn)心。

自此之后，茶歇就成了一種社會(huì)潮流。在19世紀(jì)80年代，通常，下午茶會(huì)安排在起居室，時(shí)間大約是在下午四點(diǎn)到五點(diǎn)，而上層社會(huì)的女士們則會(huì)穿著長(zhǎng)裙，戴手套和帽子來品用下午茶。

傳統(tǒng)的下午茶包括精選的三明治，英式奶油松餅，還有蛋糕和其他甜點(diǎn)。選用印度或錫蘭（現(xiàn)斯里蘭卡）出產(chǎn)的茶葉放入銀質(zhì)茶壺內(nèi)泡茶，再將茶水倒在精致的中國骨瓷茶杯中飲用。
